Restorative Justice Services
The Restorative Justice Programs of Volunteers of America Alaska are
part of Anchorage's
nationally recognized Making a Difference Partnership and work in
collaborative efforts with the State of Alaska Division of Juvenile Justice,
Anchorage Youth Court, Anchorage District Court, and a host of other public and
private agencies. Monitoring services
have been developed to provide timely and effective intervention for young
offenders in a manner which promotes responsibility and holds young people accountable
for their actions by ensuring that they follow through with court or otherwise mandated
programming.
The programs incorporate
a number of goals, including: accountability to the victim and community to
make amends and restore losses, the development of increased juvenile
competency as a result of contact with the system, and public safety. Key
principles tied to these goals include the belief that early, effective
intervention will prevent a juvenile from progressing more deeply into the entrenched
behaviors leading to chronic delinquency, and that a system of graduated
sanctions best helps to meet the needs of each individual.
